Mameshiki Review - Cirno

Cirno is a ice fairy from the Touhou Project games, which are a series of shooting games. Touhou Projects plot revolves around strange phenomena that occur in the realm of Gensokyo, an isolated community which was once haunted by yokai, now in present day human and yokai coexist in Gensokyo, however the seal which surrounds Gensokyo has weakened and more things from the outside world appear in Gensokyo.

Cirno is considered childish and stupid by most people as she has a superiority complex. Her favourite pastime is freezing frogs and she likes to say 'I'm the strongest.'

Packaging:

Cirno comes in a standard mameshiki box.

On the front is a window for viewing the figure, on each side are pictures of the figure, and on the back there is relevant information, all in Japanese, and pictures of the figure in various poses with their various accessories. Instructions for swapping face pieces and other items are printed on the box tabs. Also take note that all figures you purchase have the correct authentication printed or stickered on the box.

Inside the box the figure is held between two pieces of moulded plastic, with spaces for their accessories.  Boxes also come with inserts which act as backdrops in the box and can be taken out and used for backdrops while displaying figures. Cirno's backdrop is a vibrant yellow.

Stand:

Cirno comes with the standard mameshiki stand. Made of clear plastic and has a ball on either end, the largest plugs into the base in one of three possible places, it then acts as a ball and socket joint. The smaller ball plugs into one of two pieces which plug into the figure. This creates another ball and socket joint. One of the end pieces plugs into the figure and the other is a piece which can I assume be used with an accessory belonging to another figure in the line. The stand supports the figure well and allows it to be displayed in dynamic poses.

Stand = 8/10

Sculpt:

Cirno's overall design is very cute. She is a chibi version of her character and is utterly adorable.

Starting from the top her hair and bow looks lovely and her face is lovely with chubby cheeks. Her upper body is petite with a nice blend of shoulders to joints making seeing them not unpleasant. Her crystal wings look sharp and gives a good contrast between the soft lines of the rest of her. Her dress is fanned out with a nice ripple and the frills on her bloomers are nice. Her feet are very large but it adds to her cuteness and stability.

Sculpt = 9/10

Paint:

Cirno has a colour scheme of blue and white. She is done in block colours but they are nice and vibrant. There are few defects the only criticism being that her hands and arms are not an exact match of skin tone which makes them look a little like gloves.

Paint = 7/10

Articulation:

Cirno use’s mainly ball and socket joints which allow a huge range of movement.

At the head her neck there is a ball and socket joint allowing her to look up and down and side to side and to cock her head. To change the faces on mameshiki the front piece of hair is removed and then the faces can be taken of and swapped. They also come with a special removable hair piece which can be taken out and flipped providing a peg for hats to be attached too.

The shoulder consists of a ball joint which allows full range of motion to the shoulder. At the wrist the various hands plug into a small hole at the end of the arm and can swivel around.

At the waist is another ball joint which allows her to turn and bend forward and back. At the hips are two ball joints one for each leg giving a large range of movement. The ankle also a ball joint allowing the foot to point and flex turn in and out.

Cirno has one additional point of articulation. Her bow is on a peg and can swivel around.

Pose:

Cirno is therefore highly posable especially when using her bent arm and leg pieces. She can be posed in a variety of ways. With the use of the accessories supplied, her crystal and her sword and her face stickers, she can be displayed in a number of poses, she can be ready for battle, sleeping, or happily skipping about.

Articulation & Pose = 9/10

Enjoyment:

I will break down enjoyment into two categories: Accessories and Play Value.

Accessories:

Cirno comes with three facial expressions; A happy face, a teeth grinning face, and a blank face which when used in conjunction with her stickers can make a variety of expressions. Cirno also comes with an assortment of hands; a pair of open hands, a pair of fists, a pair of closed hands, a pair of holding hands, a pointing finger and the hand for holding her crystal.

Cirno also comes with her crystal and crystal sword as well as bended arm pieces and bended knee pieces.

Play Value:

I will break down play value into two categories: Compatibility, with other figures and accessories, and general play.

Compatibility:

Cirno is very compatible with other mameshiki accessories with the extra hair piece for wearing hats and the other stand piece.

Next up is a height comparison, as you can see she is roughly half the size of a figma.

General Play:

In general Cirno is very fun, she oozes cuteness which her range of articulation adds too because you can have her sitting down on your knee head cocked smiling sweetly. This is my first mameshiki figure and I am very impressed with her.

Overall Cirno is adorable and I much prefer her chibi form than that of Nendoroids. I recommend trying this new figure line out even though it is on the more expensive side of articulated figures.

Enjoyment = 9/10

Over all Cirno scores 8.2/10
